GLOSSARY 63 Variable Variable printing is a method in which text, graphics and images change from one label to the next, resulting in each label being unique. Varnish A thin protective coating that is bonded and cured with ultraviolet light. Provides moisture protection but does not provide UV ray protection. • Gloss UV Varnish Leaves a high gloss finish. Not available for matte stocks. • Matte UV Varnish Leaves a no-glare subtle finish. White Back-Up White back-up is the process of applying white ink directly behind the artwork to make it easier to read on clear stocks. See diagram below. White Flood Coat The process of applying white ink across the entire label to make it easier to read on clear stocks, giving it the look of a white label. Lamination • Gloss Lamination Our standard gloss lamination enhances appearance while adding a high-gloss sheen that provides weather-resistant protection for our outdoor stocks. Offers excellent acid, chemical and oil resistance. • Matte Lamination Matte lamination provides a matte finish with a low-glare surface to enable electronic scanning. It’s also the best laminate for handwriting information on your labels. • Sunscreen Lamination Sunscreen lamination is a clear polyester film specifically formatted to protect the label by screening out harmful UV rays. Extends the fade resistance of some inks depending on the environment and usage and provides a high-gloss sheen. Liner Side Printing Also known as backside printing. Copy is printed on the liner of the label. Often used to offer coupons, share business address and hours, promote upcoming events or anything else you'd like to share with your customers. Matrix The stock material surrounding a die cut label. Otherwise known as "what's left when you peel off all the labels". Outside Diameter Refers to the measurement across the roll of labels at its widest point, including the core. Registration The arrangement of two or more printed images or colors in exact alignment with each other. Perfect registration results in a crisp, clean multi-colored image. Reverse An image where the stock shows through as the imprint. As an example, a white label with black ink would appear as a black label with a white imprint. Square Cut Labels Also known as "Butt Cut," these labels have right angle corners. Each label butts up to the next one on the roll, with no gap of unused liner.
